Most roof problems announce themselves long before the ceiling stains. Here is what we get called out for most often in the Las Vegas valley.
Brown rings on a ceiling or a wall mean water has already been getting in for a while. The entry point is often nowhere near the stain, which is why guessing at it rarely works.
Tile takes the sun well but it is brittle. A cracked or slid tile leaves the underlayment exposed, and in Las Vegas that underlayment is what is actually keeping the water out.
Heat cycling lifts the edges of asphalt shingles and monsoon wind finishes the job. Once a section starts curling, the ones around it usually follow.
Water still sitting on a flat or low slope roof a day after rain means the drainage or the coating has failed. Standing water finds every weak seam eventually.
Chimneys, vents, skylights and wall junctions are where most leaks actually start. The field of the roof is usually fine, the detail work around the penetrations is not.
Grit collecting at the downspouts is shingle surface washing away. It is an early warning that the roof is nearing the end of its useful life.

Not always. A leak is usually a failed detail rather than a failed roof, and flashing, a cracked tile or a small section of shingles can often be repaired on their own. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at. If a repair will hold, we repair it.

Tile, asphalt shingle, flat and low slope, foam roofing and roof coatings, plus patio and balcony recovers and recoats. Metal roofing is repair only, we do not install or replace metal roofs.
Not necessarily. The water travels along the underside of the decking and shows up at the lowest point it can reach, which is often several feet from where it got in. That is why we inspect rather than patch the spot under the stain.
